Although the dinosaurs are gone, extant vertebrates provide clues to the development of photoreception among the clades that probably preceded and then radiated into the dinosaurs. The ancient orderRhynchocephalia, which includes Sphenodon as its only family, with two surviving species, had its heyday between 200 million and 100 million years ago. While this order is reptilian, these creatures were not lizards, but their own order.
Approximately 100 million years ago as other members of Rhynchocephalia were succumbing to extinction, Gondwanaland was breaking apart and New Zealand and its islands were breaking free from Australia, thereby isolating this last member of Rhynochocephalia, Sphenodon, presumably without competition. The tuatara survives virtually unchanged, as a fossil relict and provides us with a glimpse of vertebrate evolution from perhaps as long as 200 million years ago.
In the early Jurassic (approximately 200 million years ago) tetrapods were radiating into lizards, turtles, crocodiles, dinosaurs, and eventually birds and mammals. Sphenodon was in an order of early reptiles and provides us with a window into those beginnings.
The tuatara has a third eye, as do some other reptiles. But this adaptation has been lost in the radiation into later orders such as crocodiles, birds, and mammals, although remnants of this organ can be found in most of these. The third eye, then, represents evolution’s earlier approach to photoreception.
In the tuatara, as in the other reptiles with the organ, the third eye is a dorsal midline structure just ventral to a parietal plug which is homologous to, and resembles, a cornea. Immediately ventral to the parietal plug is a lens that is surprising similar, at least on a histological basis, to those of the lateral eyes. The vitreous cavity analogue is ventral to the lens and dorsal to a pigment epithelial layer. Ventral to the pigment epithelial cells are the primitive ciliated photoreceptors which are everted (our photoreceptors are inverted with the photopigment on the distal end of the retinal cells). Ganglion cell layers are distal to the photoreceptors, much more like the retina of an octopus rather than that of a vertebrate (see essay BJO July 2003). These structures can be seen in the figure above (Ung CY-J, Molteno ACB, An enigmatic eye: the histology of the tuatara pineal complex. Clin Exp Ophthalmol 2004;32:614–18). The retina is upside down with the retinal pigment epithelium interposed between any incoming light and the photoreceptors! Sphenodon, and other reptiles, have everted photoreceptors with outer segments containing stacks of discs very similar to those of the lateral eyes (Eakin RM, The Third Eye. UC Press, 1973).
Why should the photoreceptors be everted in the third eye but not in the lateral eyes? As explained by Eakin in The Third Eye, it all relates to embryology. In vertebrates, all eyes begin as evaginations of the diencephalon to create optic vesicles, and the lateral eyes proceed to invaginate forming optic cups. But the third eye never invaginates and is lined with the ciliated epithelium that becomes the photoreceptors with the ciliated portion of the cells extending inward towards the centre of the vesicle or cyst. The most distal (and most dorsal) portion of the evagination of the third eye condenses to become a lens leaving the cyst lined with everted cells. The portion of the developing third eye that condenses into a lens, then, is homologous to a portion of the retina in the lateral eye. Furthermore, the ciliated cells that line this cyst in the third eye differentiate into pigment epithelium and everted photoreceptors. It is as if some stimulus is missing, and a complete “normal” vertebrate eye never forms.
If the development of the third eye seems mysterious, the function is even more obscure. Most observers believe the organ to be a solar dosimeter useful for photoperiod recognition for circadian and seasonal rhythms, but there may be more to this murky organ than first meets the eye. The parietal eye in reptiles, including Sphendon, is not laterally symmetrical which, in and of itself, is unusual in the world of bilateral symmetrical organisms such as vertebrates. Development of the reptilian third eye is actually believed to be as a pair of diencephalic evaginations with the more rostral and left sided portion becoming the parietal eye and the more caudal and right sided portion becoming the pineal sac. In animals that have lost the parietal eye, including mammals, the pineal sac is retained and condensed into the form of the pineal gland. In reptiles, the pineal synthesises melatonin and probably other hormones. In humans, the pineal synthesises melatonin and many other neuroendocrine regulatory compounds. Melatonin influences vertebrate thermoregulation and, importantly, the circadian rhythm by acting as a somnifacient.
The third eye did not spring de novo in the early reptiles or even the early tetrapods as there is a homologous photosensitive organ in frogs, and even some fishes suggesting that this central dorsal third eye is much older than reptiles and probably belongs to our watery beginnings as chordates. The lamprey, a cyclostome, is a primitive fish that has the asymmetrical pineal complex mentioned above suggesting that the structure is probably older than the Devonian period leading perhaps as far back as the protochordates. But, since the pineal complex seems to be in decline even among the reptiles and in subsequent radiations, it may be going the way of the appendix and, hence, is a very lonely eye indeed.

Impressionante a inteligencia desse homem. Por exemplo, quando assistimos um filme e vemos uma paisagem na tela (como um rio no meio de montanhas), apesar de estar-mos imoveis no sofa, nossa mente viaja, sentindo as emocoes que a imagem transmite, vivendo “mentalmente” naquele momento a “realidade” da iamgem ao inves da realidade da sala e do sofa. Mas a mente de Russel esta super- atenta, nao se deixa enganar e percebe – o que nunca vi ninguem mais perceber – que existe uma luz dentro do projetor que produz a imagem, que tal luz bate na tela e toma aquelas formas e cores, que tudo nao passa de mera luz. Ou seja, ele tem a capacidade de manter sua mente dentro do seu cerebro sentado no sofa assistindo o filme mas ao mesmo tempo elevando sua mente para cima e vendo o quadro de seu corpo, o sofa, o projetor, a luz, a tela, a imagem na tela… e perceber que sua mente no cerebro esta esquecendo a realidade material de seu ambiente, atraida pela luz e por uma ilusao de um nao-realismo produzido pela luz. Este tipo de astucia unica ev util, pois por exemplo, nos lembramos aqui que quando livres mariposas voando no ar vem a luz de uma lampada, irresistivelmente se deixam atrair para a luz e ficam a girar em volta da lampada sem querer/conseguir escapar, hipnotizadas, ate cairem mortas. E assim comecamos a entender um pouco do porque a luz na tela da tv ou do monitor do computador faz pessoas se comportarem anormalmente, ficando imoveis ao inves de se moverem e lutarem para sobreviver melhor. Ele nos leva a suspeitar que a luz ev uma armadilha para nos.
Portanto, mesmo que Peter Russel tenha a fama entre os outros de ser um “lunatico”, ou um “mistico”, ou um “produtor de inutilidades para desperdicar nosso tempo e confundir nossa racionalidade”, que digam os outros o que quizerem, pois para mim, quem foi capaz de perceber algo que eu fui incapaz, mas que ev perfeitamente evidente, merece e tem que ser estudado.
Ja de cara entre nessa investigacao baseado em meu aprendizado de que toda mente humana quando descobre/recebe novas informacoes tem que desmanchar o seu subjetivo montado quadro geral do mundo total, misturar todas as pecas e re-montar o quebra-cabecas, gerando novo quadro. Este nosso estudo tem revelado que hoje existem duas correntes diferentes de pensamento se conflitando: 1) consciencia nao existe, o que existe e o mundo material e um conjunto de emocoes que sao meras evolucoes de forcas naturais fisicas, evolucoes possiveis dentro da nova arquitetura que ev o cerebro humano, o qual, com sua unica realidade material, ev o verdadeiro produtor do que se cahma de consciencia; 2) Consciencia ev o inicio e o fim de tudo, sendo o mundo material uma sua temporaria e provisoria producao. Essa consciencia infinita ev Deus, logo, desde que a temos em nos, nos somos Deus aqui e agora (que ev a linha de pensamento de Russel tambem). E por fim existe uma outra forma de pensamento, que nao ev uma corrente coletiva pois resume-se a um homem so, pelo que estou vendo, que esta apostando e investigando uma terceira alternativa, que seria mais ou menos um meio-termo entre os radicais “existe e so ela existe de fato”, e “nao-existe de fato”. Na minha opiniao, os dois grupos tem algo em comum. Sao pensadores traidos por viverem no ” o meio-ambiente como produto do homem”, um ambiente de asfalto, concreto, salas fechadas com ar condicionado, distantes da sua natureza que os criou. Sao mentes que foram bombardeadas com uma enxurrada de novas informacoes que se recolheram na imobilidade e meditacao para tentarem reorganizar os pedacos esparsos de suas mentes fragmentadas em informacoes abstratas que nao se conectam entre si, porque precisam de algo em que acreditarem. Mas como ainda lhes falta muitas informacoes, suas cosmovisoes nao podem ser a ultima verdadeira. Tenho pena deles, antes de serem transgressores sao vitimas, e os compreendo, porque comigo acontece o mesmo, por isso, quanto impulsivamente sinto raiva de suas agressoes contra minha cosmovisao e vou reagir com sarcasmo ou brutalidade, me contenho ao lembrar disso e me conscientizar que estamos juntos no mesmo barco que esta a deriva. Mas por meu lado, sou diferente, pois vivo no “o homem como produto do meio-ambiente”, e este meio ambiente ainda ev a natureza na sua forma selvagem, no seu estado de caos, sem asfaltos e ar condicionado, mas locupleto de piuns e carapanas, vampirinhos sugadores de sangue. Dessa experiencia de vida extraio a crenca que a Natureza nao joga dados com suas criaturas, portanto o que ela nos mostra aqui e agora ev o que ela ev em todo lugar, mesmo antes e alem do Big Bang e deste Universo. Portanto, se quero saber por exemplo o que ev essa coisa que pensa dentro de mim e me sente como existente, como ela emergiu nesse mundo material, devo me basear no unico evento que vejo aqui e agora, que ev a emergencia da consciencia num embriao formado dentro de um utero, depois de sete ou oito meses de sua existencia em formas inferiores. Assim, quando projeto o que a Natureza faz aqui e agora para inquirir o que a mesma Natureza faz la, antes e depois, a nivel de Universo, vejo os 13,7 bilhoes de anos de sua idade ( ou que seja outro numero qualquer), como o tempo e os processos em que a materia tinha outras formas inferiores a do ser humano. Seja como for ev uma terceira alternativa pela qual eu tenho que militar por que acho mais uma teoria a ser necessariamente considerada e nao vejo ninguem mais lutando por mante-la a tona junto com as outras duas – que na realidade seriam as duas faces de uma unica moeda. Mas vamos entao analizar Peter Russel e sua cosmovisao pela otica da cosmovisao da Matrix/DNA, para ver se obtenho uteis informacoes e testar/aprimorar meu humilde e incompleto quadro mental.

Mr. Russel: Maybe you are interested to know a third alternative theory about matter x consciousness. You and yours oppositors are the two opposites faces of a unique coin and this third is another coin. You (the primacy of consciousness) and yours oppositors (the primacy of matter) are thinkers living at “the environment produced by men”, while I am living as ” the man produced by environment”. You living at modern civilization and me living at Amazon jungle. The most of our informations are different, so, when trying to connect these informations for getting a final world view, we get different results. As merely product of brute and chaotic state of Nature, I don’t believe that Nature plays dice with her creatures (as suggests the men producing their environments), so, my questions about consciousness & material Universe are answered by what I see here and now, watching consciousness emerging at human embryos from brute matter driven by conscious parents. A debate should be interesting.

Russel is arguing how consciousness arises from unconscious matter and why we are selfware. I don’t understand. Consciousness arises inside wombs in its embryos after 7 months because it was existing at parents existing before and beyond the womb. So, consciousness arises inside the Universe at the right time (be it 13 billions years) that complexity produces embryos which were produced by parents as natural systems existing before and beyond the Universe. I prefer the “naive simplicity” of Matrix/DNA Theory.
There’s a correlation between consciousness and complexity. “Your” consciousness reflects the level of complexity of your whole system. Over the years, most your cells die and are replaced, but the complexity continues and so does the experience of “I”.

Peakes had given macabre new meaning to the phrase “dangerous idea”, and unwittingly started a practice that continues today.
“What we decided was that from then on, any member of the APS could submit an abstract on any subject to any meeting,” said Brian Schwartz of the City University of New York, a longtime APS member and former chair of the society’s Forum on Physics and Society.
“In the late 1960s during the height of the Vietnam war, people were submitting the peace symbol. I submitted abstracts about the job problem,” he told BBC News.
And of course, he said, “there were always crackpot submissions.”
‘Big questions’
Much of physics dances around the really big questions – what is stuff ultimately made of, when did the Universe begin, how will it end, and so on – the kinds of questions that invite theories and speculation from all corners of humanity.
And when someone can couch their pet theory in the language of mathematics, sometimes it can just about pass for physics proper.
In 1633, Galileo Galilei was accused of heresy for promoting the Copernican theory, which suggested that the Earth revolved around the sun. This challenged the long held view that the Earth was stationary at the centre of the universe. It eventually become the accepted model of the solar system.
In 1859, Charles Darwin presented the theory that species evolve gradually with time, adapting to their environment. Darwin’s theory was vehemently attacked, particularly by the Church, as it implied that the Earth had not been created perfectly. However, his ideas soon gained currency and have become the new orthodoxy.
Over a century ago it was widely believed that the Earth’s continents were fixed in position. But in 1914, after noticing that South America could fit into Africa like a jigsaw puzzle, meteorologist Alfred Wegener proposed that they were once joined together but had gradually drifted apart. Many scientists ridiculed his idea that continents ‘ploughed’ through the Earth’s crust like a ship through pack ice. His ideas were accepted in the 1960s, when the weight of evidence proved impossible to ignore.
Conference organisers have to thematically group hundreds or even thousands of submissions into sessions containing just a few presentations each.
How to give voice to the more… let’s call them speculative physics submissions among them?
Put them in sessions all to themselves.
“We can’t promise you an audience, we can only give you a microphone and a room. And I think that’s important,” said Virginia Trimble of the University of California Irvine, who has held positions within the APS for decades.
“I’m a great believer that this is a valuable policy, and I quite often volunteer to chair the sessions of that kind,” she told BBC News.
“That kind”: the sessions have titles and timings that change from year to year, so that it’s not always obvious to the contributors just what kind of session they’re presenting to.
“Sometimes crackpots regard each other as crackpots, and are annoyed at being placed in that session,” said a chairperson of one such session at this year’s April meeting – who should probably remain nameless.
But physics – some of the really tricky stuff – can be so mathematically dense that even the organisers slip up.
Prof Schwartz said that some researchers submit perfectly mainstream work to the meetings, but perhaps sell it badly.
“Sometimes they’ll say, ‘hey, you put me in with all the crazy papers’,” he said.
Two-way street
This isn’t just about humouring those who have fringe ideas; there is a two-way exchange going on, said co-chair of the APS April meeting Jonathan Rosner of the University of Chicago.
“The reason for having these presentations is that there is a possibility that someone might get some constructive criticism, they might get some redirection that would put them onto (more accepted ideas),” he told BBC News.
“And students who attend might learn to distinguish the chaff from the wheat – it’s a good experience for them to be exposed to this now and then.
“Or the (presenters) may have, through very unlikely means, come upon something but they just don’t have the language to connect with us, and we wouldn’t want to dismiss something like that.”
That last possibility is a compelling one. Take the case of Dan Shechtman, who in 1982 stumbled across an entirely new kind of crystal, but couldn’t really explain it. He became known around the “unconventional” sessions at APS meetings.
“The boy done good”: Prof Shechtman was ridiculed but later received a Nobel
“For two years I did not have anybody who believed my results and was usually ridiculed,” he told APS News in 2003.
About half of those who present work in the unconventional sessions are repeat visitors – determined to come back year after year and finally convince the community of their grand ideas.
Another session chair told BBC News that “it costs these guys a lot of money – you wish undergraduates could be so engaged”.
Prof Trimble added: “Once in a while somebody has the glimmerings of a right idea – although quite often it’s already out there in the mainstream community under slightly different language,” she said.
“But some of them are certifiable and you just sort of back off very gently and find somebody tall to stand behind.”
One wonders what it might have been like to run into Bayard Peakes at an APS meeting.
Yet, the chance to put such researchers on the right track and to hone students’ critical skills are enough to convince everyone here that the sessions are a good idea.
And as Prof Schwartz put it, there is always the chance of another story like Prof Shechtman’s.
“There are times that something is so ahead of its time, or someone writes it so poorly… that some people can appreciate it and others think it’s a little cuckoo,” he said.

This night I was reading about light, electric magnetic spectrum and so on. I think the deepest foundations of this material world is like an ocean of lightwaves still propagating from the pulsation that began with Big Bang. Instead of luminous light we see the deep darkness because it blind us. Matter is this condensed light becoming particles. So, the world is all white, bodies are unseen. We see it colored. It said that the were no animals that killed–all vegetarians. And there weren’t thorns, etc on plants. These came symbolically after the fall. So did human violence, selfishness, abuse, etc. His design was not flawed, and neither is God’s salvation. But the choice to walk away is flawed.
