Luz solar > (captada por) moléculas orgânicas corantes > dota estas moléculas com a extra energia (solar) que empurram, chutam electrons da molécula > para dentro de nanoparticulas de titatnia ( ceramica titanium dioxide), onde o corante se fixa. Os eletrons são coletados por eletrodos para gerar uma corrente eletrica, da qual se obtem luz.
